At The Table
ANNOUNCING… AT THE TABLE
“Preservation of one's own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.” –César Chávez
Dear Friends,
If you scan a contemporary calendar you'll find many month-long celebrations of different groups - Black History Month, Women's History Month, Pride Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and more - all designed to expand awareness of and appreciation for those historically overlooked by white dominant culture.
I'm glad these celebrations exist, that there is a formal way that the accomplishments, achievements, and contributions of various communities are recognized. But it's really not enough, is it? When prejudice, systemic racism, and other social injustices are woven into the very fabric of our society, taking one month out of the year feels like token recognition.
Here at TGPP we've been discussing how to honor communities without limiting ourselves to a celebration one month a year. One idea we've come up with is this: We're starting a new focus we're calling AT THE TABLE, where periodically we’ll share talks, webinars, books, businesses, culture, films, events, classroom lessons, food, photos, music, and more - all celebrating a wide range of cultures and perspectives.
It feels like a small thing to do given the enormity of the inequities that exist in the world, but we hope it's something positive and useful and generates productive conversations. We'll be learning as we go, so please send along resources you'd like to share, and don’t hesitate to reach out with feedback. We are always open to dialogue and finding new ways to advance peace and justice in the world.
In solidarity,
Jacqueline, TGPP Founding Director
Here's our first AT THE TABLE spotlight, which seems a very fitting place to start. It's a TED talk by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which she calls "The Danger of a Single Story." For more on her work please visit her website at https://www.chimamanda.com.
